Untitled Bowl from Bamboo Series (2009)
Douglas fir, pigment: Turned, sandblased
5 inches high by 4 ½ inches wide
This piece is from my Bamboo series which refers to the color of the bands.
Some thoughts on the piece: I think sometimes there is something appealing
about a successful piece that is small enough to fit in one's hands.
Added life from natural edge rim. Asymmetric design choice adds character,
and gives
the pieces a "front" as opposed to typical bird's mouth natural edge bowls.
Overall darkness of the piece creates a contemplative mood.
Harmonious energies created by the bamboo bands that flow in horizontal
layers from the top down.
The closer you look the more detail. Sandblasted ribs and texture between
the ribs -pigmented to add contrast to the textures - inside and out.
Sandblasted pieces have a wonderful feel and in comparison make a polished
piece feel a bit like plastic. Blasted pieces also create a marvelous
sound of the hands on the surface, making it hard to put them down once
picked up. This piece will be in the upcoming show and catalog for Small Treasures 2010
exhibit at
the
del Mano Gallery. Inquiries as
to availability can be made directly to that gallery.
