Featured Piece - March
2009 (posted 3/22/09)

HMS Surprise
7 inches height by 9 ¼ inches length
Douglas fir: turned, sandcarved
A Skeleton Bowl from my Bones of the Tree series.
The title of the piece HMS Surprise (Her Majesty’s Ship
Surprise) comes from Patrick O’Brian’s Master and Commander: Far Side of the
World. The very first time I viewed this piece after final completion, a vision
came to me of Jack Aubrey's ship (a square rigged warship from the 18th century)
listing under heavy sail as seen from the stern.
Here's a detail shot:

online exhibit are released. Hint: they illustrate three different treatments
with sandblasting and Douglas fir.
